The Shopify Conversion Checklist

Conversion optimization is a system, not a hack. Here's a prioritized checklist of fixes that consistently lift Shopify conversion, organized from highest impact to fine-tuning.

Product pages first: where conversion lives

Most conversion happens — or doesn't — on the product page. Fast images, clear pricing, social proof, and a sticky add-to-cart on mobile move the needle most. Specifically: use high-quality images with zoom, show price clearly (including any compare-at pricing), display review stars and review count prominently, and make the add-to-cart button sticky on mobile so it is always within thumb reach. A product page that loads in under 2 seconds with a sticky CTA can lift conversion 10-15% over a slow, non-sticky version.

Image optimization: the silent killer

Product images are usually the heaviest assets on a Shopify store. Serve them in WebP, use responsive sizes, and lazy-load everything below the fold. Shopify's built-in image CDN can serve responsive variants automatically — use the srcset attribute. A store with 50 product images at 2MB each is loading 100MB of images. Compressed to 200KB each in WebP, that drops to 10MB. The conversion impact of that difference alone is measurable.

Search and navigation

On-site search users convert 2-3x higher than browsers. Make search prominent, implement predictive search with product thumbnails, and ensure search handles typos and synonyms. For navigation, use faceted filtering on collection pages (size, color, price) and make sure filters work on mobile. A visitor who finds their product in 30 seconds converts; one who spends 5 minutes searching leaves.

Social proof throughout the journey

Reviews on product pages are table stakes. Go further: show review count in search results, display user-generated content (photos from reviews) on product pages, add trust badges near the add-to-cart button, and show "X people bought this today" for high-traffic products. Social proof works at every stage of the funnel, not just the PDP.

Checkout: remove every ounce of friction

On Shopify Plus, checkout extensibility lets you remove friction and add trust signals. Express checkout options (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay) lift conversion on mobile significantly — often by 10-20%. Offer guest checkout, show a progress indicator, and remove unnecessary fields. Every field you remove from checkout lifts conversion. Test a one-page checkout against your default.

Cart recovery

70% of carts are abandoned. Install a cart recovery flow: an exit-intent popup with a discount, an abandoned cart email sequence (1 hour, 24 hours, 72 hours), and browser push notifications for cart abandoners. A well-tuned cart recovery sequence recovers 10-15% of abandoned carts — that is pure revenue.

Mobile-specific fixes

Mobile conversion is typically 50-70% of desktop conversion. Close that gap. Make tap targets at least 44px, ensure the add-to-cart button is sticky, use mobile-first layouts (not desktop scaled down), and test checkout on a real phone over cellular. Most conversion gaps are mobile gaps.

Run through the checklist, measure each change, and keep what works. Conversion optimization is iterative — test, learn, and compound the wins over time.
