A headless CMS decouples your content from your presentation layer, letting you feed content to websites, apps, and any other front-end through an API. The three most popular options — Contentful, Sanity, and Strapi — each have distinct strengths. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

Contentful: the enterprise default

Contentful is the most established headless CMS, used by brands like Spotify, Nike, and Red Bull. Its strengths: a mature API, excellent localization support, robust role-based permissions, and a polished editorial interface. Its weaknesses: pricing scales aggressively (the free tier is limited, and enterprise plans are expensive), the content modeling interface can feel rigid, and real-time preview requires custom work. Choose Contentful if you are an enterprise team that needs governance, localization, and a battle-tested platform.

Sanity: the developer favorite

Sanity is built around a powerful real-time editing experience (Sanity Studio) and a flexible content model where everything is customizable. Its strengths: the best editing experience of the three, real-time collaboration, a powerful query language (GROQ), and generous free tier. Its weaknesses: Sanity Studio requires developer setup, the learning curve for GROQ is steep, and pricing for high-traffic sites can add up. Choose Sanity if you have a strong dev team and want maximum flexibility and the best editor experience.

Strapi: the open-source option

Strapi is open-source and self-hosted, meaning you control your data and infrastructure. Its strengths: no vendor lock-in, full customization, a visual content-type builder, and no per-seat pricing. Its weaknesses: you manage your own hosting and updates, the plugin ecosystem is smaller than Contentful's, and the editorial experience is less polished. Choose Strapi if you want full control, have dev ops capacity, and want to avoid per-seat SaaS pricing.

Pricing comparison

Contentful's free tier supports 5 users and 25,000 records; paid plans start at $300/month. Sanity's free tier is generous (10,000 records, 3 users); growth plans start at $99/month per project. Strapi is free to self-host; cloud plans start at $15/seat/month. For a small team, Sanity or Strapi are the most cost-effective. For enterprise, Contentful's pricing includes features the others charge extra for.

The decision framework

Choose Contentful for enterprise teams that need governance, localization, and a mature platform. Choose Sanity for teams that want the best editing experience and developer flexibility. Choose Strapi for teams that want open-source, self-hosted control, and no per-seat pricing. All three are excellent — the best choice depends on your team, budget, and requirements.

What about WordPress as a headless CMS?

WordPress can also be used as a headless CMS via its REST API or the WPGraphQL plugin. It is free, familiar to content teams, and has the largest plugin ecosystem. The trade-off: the API is less polished than dedicated headless CMS options, and you carry WordPress's technical debt. For teams already on WordPress, going headless with WPGraphQL is a pragmatic step up without a full migration.

There is no universally best headless CMS — there is the best one for your team. Evaluate based on your editor experience needs, developer capabilities, budget, and growth trajectory. Most teams over-index on features and under-index on the editing experience, which is what your content team will live with every day.
